Discovering Color
Color is one of the very first subjects we are taught in school. We learn about what foods and every day objects are associated with different colors. Strawberries and tomatoes are red, bananas and lemons are yellow, and carrots and oranges are orange. These lessons come easily to those who see color correctly. But, what if you cannot see color? What if color looks different to me than it does to you? Living with a color deficiency can be stressful for anyone, especially children. The process of learning color as a color deficient/colorblind child can be overwhelming, stressful, and, even embarrassing. Teachers are not often taught how to detect or educate children with color deficiencies. The Color Blindness Awareness Association states that one of the easiest ways to lessen the stress of educating a child with a color deficiency is to eliminate color. This means, show the child images in black and white and allow them to place the color where they know it should go. For this project, I curated a game of flashcards following this exact principle. I created a set of 7 double sided flash cards with hand drawn motifs and labels. I was able to create a prototype where I designed a pattern for the exterior of the box, all labels, and cards. This project was extremely rewarding and fun to do. Below are the final outcomes!
